Janie’s Picinic Area Dedicated

On Saturday, June 15, 2024, The Willow Waterhole Greenspace Conservancy dedicated Janie’s Picnic Area, recognizing the work of Janie Schexnayder for her contributions to the Greenway’s development. The event brought out far-flung friends, colleagues, and family, including her daughter Laura from Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada, to honor Janie and the work that she contributed to making the Greenway what it is today. Janie provided the necessary analysis of data from the Harris County Appraisal District, where she and her husband Russell spent countless hours in 1997, to provide the Braes Bayou Association a basis on which a two-phase technical and economic feasibility study on the Greenway could be created. Thanks to their work, that study led to the architectural work which has resulted in the current Greenspace.

Janie and Russell Schexnayder were able to conceptualize a project that would change the character of the area, and become a model for flood control, ecological protection, public greenspace, and increase of natural habitat for the nation.

New Signage Honors Long-Time Contributors

Just in time for the ribbon-cutting, new signage, in the works for over a year, was installed. The signage highlights the contributions of community leaders who have been involved with Willow Waterhole since its inception (or before), and those who have contributed monetarily to grow this jewel to its current state.

Bill Burhans, center, flanked by Licia Green and Martha Castex-Tatum and joined by long-time WWGC Board Members and officials from Harris County Flood Control and City of Houston Parks and Recreation, officially open the 3.5 mile Westbury trail.

In addition, way-finding signs have been added, pointing to the different trails and other amenities in the Greenway. More signage is to come at all of the lakes.
